Janda Diner · Peckham

Rye Lane, Peckham

A market street that reminded Ady of home

Ady didn't choose Peckham at random. He chose it because Rye Lane sounded and smelled like home: the stalls open late, the noise that doesn't really stop after dark. Walk it at the right hour and it isn't far from a pasar malam back home… a night market, just a few thousand miles away.

A hard-won reputation

Rye Lane wasn't always spoken about kindly. In Victorian London, it was known as the Oxford Street of the south, lined with the same handsome buildings that still stand today. Decline followed, and the street's reputation took far longer to recover than it took to lose.

What brought it back wasn't one development, but everyday people who refused to let the street's character disappear — the Bussey Building was saved from demolition twice by locals who fought tooth and nail to keep it. Peckham has since been named one of London's coolest neighbourhoods more than once by Time Out, the Telegraph, and more. It earned that the hard way, and it shows.

Good neighbours

A short walk gets you to the Bussey Building, home to Bold Tendencies' rooftop art and the CLF Art Café, or to Peckhamplex, one of London's last great independent cinemas. Rye Lane rewards a whole afternoon, not just a dinner or lunch booking.

Easier to reach than you think

Peckham Rye station sits in Travelcard Zone 2, with direct trains to London Bridge in around fifteen minutes and to Victoria in well under twenty. For those not familiar with the area, Peckham is far closer than you think.

Right now, and what's next

Peckham Rye station is being rebuilt. A new public square is replacing the old arcade out front, with space for market stalls and reopened arches for local traders. It'll look like a building site for a while still, but it's the first real investment in how people arrive here in a generation, and Janda sits just a few minutes' walk away.
